Dutch baby

Dutch is almost a year old now, by the estimate of the vet who spayed her, but she is still very puppy in many ways. She is a quick learner. She was mostly housetrained when I got her, but unfortunately she seemed to have learned the rule as "Don't relieve yourself if a human can see you," which took a while to unlearn. After that, she taught me that all my other dogs have stayed in the yard because they chose to, not because they had to. Getting the back fence replaced suddenly moved to the top of the to-do list!

She is medium-sized, forty-some pounds, but she looks like a miniature Bernese Mountain Dog. She even has dewclaws on her hind feet, which is common among mountain dog breeds.

Ah, no. Newt, my only other dog who is still alive, is small enough to waltz through the gaps she wriggled through, but he just stood at the fence looking alert and Not Happy. He pointed me at how she got out and which way she went, though!

Newt has strong opinions about How It Is Supposed To Be, which do not include leaving home without one of his people.

When the portal opens, would you go? Would you go without hesitation? They say "openness to new experience" is one of the Big Five personality traits that is consistent over one's lifetime, but I think age, or maybe stage of life, affects that too. When I was a kid I would have gone through the door, or gotten on the spaceship. I would have missed my friends and family a lot, but I wouldn't have stayed behind for them. Now, no.

The four dogs who came to me as adults liked to explore new things, but they weren't heedless about it, the way young dogs are. They all knew that getting lost was a thing that could happen.
