I play trivia with my friend Sarah and her friend Sierra Club Guy, and sometimes other people from our book group or our families. Geeks Who Drink has two audio rounds, and none of us has listened to much popular music in the last 20 years, so we usually don't win unless there is a young person on our team.

Sierra Club Guy plays trivia three times a week, at other venues, with his other friends, including Trump Guy. Trump Guy stopped coming to the trivia night that Sarah and I go to a few months ago. Maybe because we don't win often? Maybe because I kind of usurped his place as the one who decides what to write on our answer sheet?

Sierra Club Guy would like my big weird body of knowledge to join one of his other trivia teams. I like Sierra Club Guy but really dislike Trump Guy, and not just because he voted for Trump, so I haven't gone. But this Saturday they are playing in a regional event. Sierra Club Guy has asked me twice to join them, and I'm dithering.

It's a different format from Geeks Who Drink. I don't know if I'd be any good at it. I don't know what their other friends are like. It's a long drive, though Sierra Club Guy has offered me a ride. I'm working at the Raptor Center that afternoon, which is very tiring.

But I keep imagining myself sailing in and bringing them to victory. It is ridiculously appealing.

Hm. I see the problem.

Personally, I'd only go if there's a high likelihood that I'd have fun if we lost. Because winning depends on circumstances outside my ability to predict (who competes against us) but having fun is something that I can sorta predict (is Trump guy miserable enough to drain the fun out of something I enjoy?) But that's just me.

Hah!!! If it's just for a couple of hours, it's worth trying once for sure. They can be fun. And if you supply one or two good answers, that's plenty!

If he's asking you to join them in Stevens Point next spring, that's a much bigger ask. Done it, but one highly irritating person makes it less pleasant.

Don't do it unless you think the experience other than winning will make you happy. If you enjoy competition itself, challenging yourself, win or lose go and have a good time. Otherwise this is a recipe for being very unhappy.

I've been playing Buzztime trivia (nationwide computerized games with playmaker boxes) with a group of 10 or so people for the last several years.

It used to be smaller, and we had trouble getting a quorum -- you need six people to get a bar score -- but we absorbed another group and have been pretty stable the last few years. We recently survived a move to another locale when our long-time bar decided to get rid of the trivia setup.

Except for [personal profile] arkuat, these are more friendly acquaintances than friends, and we all try to keep politics out of our discussions. It's a pleasant way to spend Tuesday evenings -- except for once a month, when my guild spinning group meets, and I go there instead.
