One of my book groups is a bit like that: we do read good books sometimes, but we spend maybe fifteen minutes of a two-three hour meeting talking about the book. We're just a bunch of old friends who have an excuse to get together once a month to talk and eat.
I fixed the lack of book talk by adding another book group. That one is hosted by the library and open to the public. Although it is mostly familiar faces from month to month, we never talk about our personal lives and not much about anything other than the book. The person leading the discussion is expected to show up with discussion questions, info about the author, and reviews.
Now, with the science fiction book group, I have three!! Which might be more than I can handle even in my current high-energy phase. (There were large swaths of my life when even one night of social activity a month was out of my bounds.)
