Maybe because she doesn't have a writing community? If she had started out in fanfic, there would have been people to say, "Absolutely, Jodi, the id wants what it wants, but have you considered..."

Or maybe she does have a writing community but everyone in it thinks "this sells more books" and "this is good" mean the same thing!
