Do you do the "Hang on, let me put my glasses on so I can hear you" thing?

Tutoring in person with masks on is a powerful reminder of how much I rely on lipreading without realizing it.

Absolutely!

My local HOH expert, MyGuy, is an introvert who's glad he can't hear what the masked ones are saying.

FUEL stands for "framework for understanding effortful listening" and it's rich loam for an Au.D school cohort to grow thesis topics.

100% yes. It has made teaching really hard for me.

For me it's the opposite - if I can't understand somebody, I turn my eyes away and point my ear towards them. Whether the issue is hearing or focus, watching their lips move won't help.

I'd suggest some of the clear masks I've read about, but I don't know how effective they are and, more importantly, you'd have to have quite a lot to give to your students.

I was astonished to realize how much lipreading I apparently do. However, I've found that the BeHear Access -- a customizable set of wired earbuds that act as hearing aids -- made an enormous difference. My old hearing aids gave up the ghost this spring, and the Access turns out to be a huge improvement on them. More comfortable to wear, and giving me good hearing. They're $350 from Amazon. Very highly recommended.
