Date: 2018-01-15 07:57 pm (UTC)Based on a true story: Ethical Concerns Swamp Many Boats*
Emma Donoghue's Room was based on the actual experience of $real-person-here. What responsibility does an author bear to the truth of the event? Does it matter If the fictional stand-in responds violently, while the real-life subject was a pacifist? Are there some events that are "out of bounds," while others are ripe for plucking as inspiration?
*"boats" being an acronym for "based on a true story," but that's too clever by half.
