Do I have a sarcastic face or something? I told Jo Walton that it was lovely to hear the goddess Athene speaking in a Welsh accent. She replied, well, you have the voice you have, and you have to read with your voice.

I didn't...

I meant that it was lovely.

Also I think that within the UK a Welsh accent isn't considered especially attractive (and definitely not prestigious), Americans' reactions notwithstanding. (I definitely like Ioan Gruffudd's voice best when he's NOT trying to iron out every bit of the Welsh accent.)

If it makes you feel better, I told Lois Bujold at Wiscon 30 that I wanted to thank her for many years of enjoyable reading, and her response was something along the lines of "what are you, 14?" I was almost 22 at the time and had been reading Bujold since... middle school? Though of course I understand that from her perspective I looked very young, and that's not so many years.

Probably one of the things mentioned below is what was going on with Jo Walton, but hopefully she'll realize you really did mean it was lovely. Wish I'd been able to catch that reading.

It's so cool that you met her, though it sounds awkward to possibly have been misunderstood.

She is! She just finished something whose working title is My Real Children, and is already writing something new, called Thessaly, containing Apollo and Artemis and Athene as characters, which is what she read from on Thursday.

Oh, cool! I have this habit of saving up things I'm looking forward to, so there are actually several Jo Walton books I haven't read yet, but I'm so glad to hear that there are more to come. And thanks for the link!
