It's international book week. The rules: Grab the closest book to you, turn to page 52, post the 5th sentence. Don't mention the title. Copy the rules as part of your post.

Page 52 is blank. Page 53 has four complete sentences, and the first word of a fifth: "Books". That looks promising.

Books assured me, in ways no other source -- not films or friends or psychotherapists or priests -- could do, that life could unfold otherwise; and in response to them I would yearn anew toward transformations of generally the most impractical kind.

My bibliomancy continues to be ridiculously on-the-nose.

Yeah, you'll like this. It's Nancy Mairs's new book of essays, Voice Lessons: On Becoming a (Woman) Writer. Here's a sentence I love:

"The essays I've included in this volume illustrate the process whereby I've constructed myself as a writer in relation to some of the (m)others whose writing has aroused me and nurtured and chastised me, each one drawing me on, teaching me to love her, to love myself in her, to love myself, to love: To write."

I did one in my own journal, too, but here's one from the book I laid a hand on before realizing it wasn't really the closest:

Which book is closest to me? The book I am currently reading in the iPod I am holding while reading this or one of the stack of books beside me? This is too hard for me.
