Something has been beeping all day. I can't tell where it is coming from: I am deaf in one ear, no ability to echolocate. When my daughter came home, she determined that it sounds like it is coming from my next-door neighbors' house. It sounds like a fire alarm. They do not appear to be home.

I believe I have at least one of their cell phone numbers on a piece of paper somewhere? And I can find their work numbers easily enough. Probably also the landline for the house that is beeping, (where they do not seem to be).

The house does not seem to be on fire, as far as I can tell. The air smells a bit smokey, but it often does in fire season, which is most of the year now; also the neighbor on the other side is using his big grill/smoker/outdoor cooker thingy.

I googled the neighbor's name and found a cellphone number. I called, got a generic voicemail, and said, approximately, "Hello! I hope this is [his name]. This is [my name], your neighbor. Um. Your house seems to be beeping. It sounds like a fire alarm? I don't think your house is on fire. The beeping has been going on for a while. It could be a dying battery. If you want me to call the fire department to check it out, or if you want me to do anything, let me know. [My phone number.]"

Whoever's phone that was hasn't called me back. Should I do something else?

Hm, I'd maybe call up the fire department non-emergency line and let them know.

I might check and see if the door is unlocked, in which case I'd go in (calling out that I am doing so), and see what is up.

Their cars are gone, so I'm not worried that they are in there suffering from carbon monoxide poisoning or something like that. The fire department non-emergency line is a good idea.
