There's a weird fundamentalist church near here whose sign often manages to piss me off. Yesterday it said, "Life without God was never meant to be lived." I'm not curious enough to go inside the church to find out, but I am curious enough for an opinion poll:

My first reading would be that it meant "life was not meant to be lived without god" and that the sign-writer might not be a native speaker of English. It is possible that I am being kinder to them than they deserve; you have the context here.

Yeah, my first thought is it's not commenting on anything in particular, it's just trying to say, in that ham-handed way of proselytizing of a lot of church signs, "Hey, if you think your life's not worth living, come in and talk to us and we'll show you how to fix it!"

But you know the church and if they have a history of cack-handedly exploiting current events, who even knows.

This was my interpretation, too: "slightly mangled attempt at expressing the concept no one is designed to live without God | we are all designed to live with God. Your basic 'Original Sin is behind all the problems in (y)our world' theology.
