That moment when you have acquired a large chai and a pesto, tomato and cheese sandwich with avocado, and you sit down for an hour of silence in preparation for your two panels in a row, and you discover that the last time you took the strip of lactase out of your purse you neglected to put it back in.

And then you learn that someone neglected to pick up her children when childcare closed for lunch, and can't be reached by phone. You are the childcare coordinator, so you get to go sit with the children for the rest of lunch break. And you get to talk to the parent when she finally does show up.

Leaving the lactase out of your purse is your mistake, yes. That someone else forgot? to pick her children up at the proper time, and was out of reach by phone, is not your doing. It's either her mistake/neglect, or a consequence of something else going wrong that she needed to deal with.

Do you find it necessary to take lactase when you eat cheese? Most hard cheese doesn't have enough lactose to bother me, though maybe my adult-onset lactose intolerance is a different kind than you have.

Grrr on the person who neglected to pick up her children.

Sometimes I can digest some cheese, but I can't predict when it won't work before it's too late. And since I thought I had lactase, I didn't ask for soy milk in the chai. Note to self: always ask for soy milk in the chai.

Ugh, I've done the lactase thing before.

Also, I knew I didn't want to work at public libraries my first day of library school when the two people sitting behind me who both worked at public libraries were comparing how long they each had to stay at work after hours without pay (!!) when someone left their kid there before they could call the police.
