Raccoon mating season came early this year, judging by the squealing and thumping on my roof. The two I saw did not look big enough for those banging noises, even if they were using WWF moves.

Methinks the roof creates a resonant surface, like the head of a tympanum. That might explain your thunderous raccoons and my depth-charge acorns.
