So this is what big fandoms are like! My podfic of [personal profile] schemingreader's Avengers fanfic Mostly Dead All Day got 108 hits in one day. Although that might be because the author posted about my podfic in her journal. Hm.

I would have expected small fandoms to have larger comments/hits and kudos/hits ratios. I think I need to make spreadsheets.

I look at the hit/kudo ratio pretty compulsively. What I've noticed so far is a couple of horizons that change the ratio. Small to medium-small fandoms or pairings do show a decreasing ratio of kudos to hits overall, but after a certain popularity the ratio goes up again, such that it becomes impossible to use it as a benchmark for probable story quality in advance of reading (this is true of the Avengers). After another point - when a story in a popular fandom, that is past the first ratio, is extraordinarily popular, or to put it another way, trendy - the ratio goes down again. This is possibly from repeat viewings, or people who feel like the author doesn't really need any more kudos at this point because her ego's already too big, or... something. I've never attempted to systematize these observations with anything like a spreadsheet though.

I haven't thought about it too hard meself, except for a couple of loose observations:

Kudos tend to run about 1 kudo to 10 hits, overall, for a story that I'll probably end up liking as well. Usually.

If there seem to be fewer kudos than I'd expect for an author I know I like, and the story's been up for a while, I check for bookmarks. Usually I'll find that there are a lot of bookmarks, which means that there are a lot of repeat visits, so the ratio of kudo/hit gets skewed.

Again, that's just a very shallow, generalized sort of observation, but so far it's served me fairly well when I'm cruising for something new to read.
