I really wanted to moderate the Living With Invisible Disabilities panel. I've got forty-seven years experience living with invisible disabilities, physical (deaf in one ear + no balance mechanism + small and poorly formed ENT tube system) and mental (social anxiety), and though I don't want to talk about any of that in front of an audience (see: social anxiety) I would be awesome at asking pertinent questions of people who did want to talk. Awesome.

I didn't get that one. I got three assignments from the freelance moderator pool.

If the Academy Awards and Emmys had a Tiptree Award ...
If we gave the Tiptree Award to movies, or to television series, who would win the award and why? Let's engage in a lively debate.

Okay, I'm going to be floundering here, but I've got Penny Hill and Joanna Lowenstein on my side, so I shall not fear.

Self-Publishing: Should You? Could You?
A variety of websites and services make publishing your own e-books and paper books simpler and less expensive than ever. What are some of the best? What are some to avoid? What are the benefits and drawbacks of becoming an indie writer? What tips do you have to help other indie writers self-publish successfully?

Another topic I know nothing about. But I have questions. I don't know any of the panelists. But there are four of them. It'll be okay. It'll probably be okay.

Animated Revolutions
She-Ra, Pirates of Dark Water, and Gargoyles all feature issues of revolution, resistance to the state/corporation, and environmentalism in the context of the show. Are we watching creative fantasies that we'll never realize or do the fantastical elements somehow make these utopian ideals seem achievable?

Aieee. Aieee. Three TV shows I've never seen. Two panelists I've never met. Aieee.

Last year I wound up moderating a panel that was, by the phrasing of the description and who the panelists were, mostly television and a little movies. I coped, but I decided I'd rather not do that again. This year, I am moderating (from the pool) one on madness in fiction, and declined "the heroine's journey" on the grounds that I didn't want two consecutive panels and that the other felt slightly more interesting and a slightly better fit with how my patterns of energy go. It's possible they'll hand me something else: I have also stated my willingness to be an emergency drop-in moderator.

I freelance moderated "Including Disabled Characters in Your Work(s)" last year, and was certainly not an expert on the topic. I chose to just confine myself to a moderator role. I think prediscussion via email (if at all possible) is particularly valuable when one doesn't know all the panelists, and when one doesn't know the topic (or all fandoms listed). Panelists can let you know what they're interested in discussing, what they want from the panel, any concerns they have (e.g. not getting into 101 stuff would be an example from that panel), and you can help pull that together into a list of questions/topics to make sure the panel stays on track. So that worked okay for me and my panelists, but of course you and your panelists may have different needs/desired approaches.

I'm sorry you didn't get the panel where you knew you'd be awesome. (But I think you'll be awesome on the others too, because, you're smart and thoughtful.)

Did you pick the PLEEEEEZE radio button as well as tick the "I'll moderate" box?

1. I dearly want to go to Wiscon one of these days. It sounds amazing.

2. I was never a big She-Ra fan, but Gargoyles and Pirates of Dark Water are both excellent. I preferred Pirates over Gargoyles, but that's an unusual perspective. If you can locate some eps of each, I recommend watching them. EXCELLENT female characters, IIRC.

Don't forget to breathe. :)

And, if you can, please believe that you have a lot of innate grace that will carry you through. I've been observing it for-- what, about five years now?

*love*

We're going to have a wonderful time!

I've got as far as thinking that gender presentations on TV are a long way behind books, so that's a starting point. Will be mulling over more thoughts in the meantime and it will be lovely to be moderated by you.
