So Friday was "Neon Day" at Mungo's school. Here is a photo of Mungo in an orange t-shirt, lime-green overshirt, and bright blue skinny jeans. At lunch he decorated his jeans and sneakers with pink tape, but I do not have a photo of that.

"People said I was very brave to wear my sister's pants to school," he said.
"Did you feel very brave?" I asked.
"Walking into school I was kind of uncomfortable, but then I was surrounded with my friends and it was okay."
"You didn't have to tell people that you were wearing your sister's pants."
"No, I didn't have to. Do you remember Laurel [lastname]?"
Of course I remember Laurel. She was on the Odyssey of the Mind team I coached when she and Mungo were in fifth grade. You never forget your OM kids.
"Well, when Laurel came in to school, she said, 'Those are Nixie's pants!'"

Hee! It's been four years since Laurel saw Nixie in those pants. I had to pick Nixie up from high school and race back to the elementary school to supervise my OM kids. I knew that every girl on that team had a crush on Nixie, but to remember Nixie's pants? After four years? Hee!


The take-home of the day: "I can't fit anything into these pockets!"

Mungo is an attractive kid. And brave! Someone raised him to follow his own star. Please tell him that I bought that same shirt from Threadless for my own teenager because it was so beautiful.

Thank you! In fact I think it was a photo of Tristan in that shirt that made me go looking for it. And then I had to buy one for each kid, because it's so lovely each would have been jealous if I bought it for the other.

My younger son (now 16) often wears pants sold as girls pants because he's so tall and thin that a lot of boys pants would either fall off or be too short. One of his female friends has a shirt that says something like "I dig guys wearing girls pants".

At the beginning of the school year, Mungo wore a tutu at lunch; not long after that, he asked me how to cope with the six girls who had let him know that they wanted him to ask them out. Of course he is also kind and funny and interesting, but I think his rockin' the gender presentation had something to do with it.

Have you seen Whole New Thing? It's about a homeschooled kid who gets sent to public school because his mother can't make him learn math. I watched it with Nixie this winter break. We see the kid finishing his first novel. Nixie says, "I like him." I say, "He's a future Reedie, isn't he?"
