life in my garden

This squirrel is very young, and unfortunately not afraid of people. It was between me and that big rock when my husband went for his camera. There is an adult female, probably this one's mother, looking down at me from the crabapple tree. So the squirrel is not abandoned, but engages in food-seeking from humans. I don't know whether this is related, but the juvenile has lost most of its body fur.

ETA: He did get a closer shot:

My mother in law throws peanuts out on her lawn for squirrels sometimes (and for the jays, who are hilarious about them) and recently she's gotten some squirrels who seem to have noticed that the peanuts come from inside the house, so they have *come inside* and done a lap around sniffing everything before zooming out again.

Many of the squirrels I knew weren't particularly shy around humans, once they had figured out we might be potential food sources.
