Jólabókaflóð and other weather
Books I gave this Jólabókaflóð:
To younger niece:
Shadowshaper by Daniel José Older
Fang Girl by Helen Keeble
To older niece:
Tooth and Claw by Jo Walton
The Invisible Library by Genevieve Cogman
To Nixie:
The River of Consciousness by Oliver Sacks
La Belle Sauvage by Philip Pullman
The Immortal Life of Henrietta Lacks by Rebecca Skloot
(I think there must have been one more here???)
To Mungo:
What If?: Serious Scientific Answers to Absurd Hypothetical Questions by Randall Munroe
Scatter, Adapt, and Remember: How Humans Will Survive a Mass Extinction by Annalee Newitz
Lovecraft Country by Matt Ruff
All Systems Red by Martha Wells
To Neal:
The Girl With All the Gifts by M. R. Carey
In other weather news Mungo's flight back to Montreal got cancelled. His new flight is at 5 a.m. Saturday morning, with a three-hour layover in Newark. I hope he doesn't get stuck in Newark.
And I got email from Lin-Manuel, because Trump doesn't remember what's going on unless Fox News continually reminds him, and Fox News doesn't talk about Puerto Rico, and Puerto Rico is this weird in-between place with taxation but no representation:
Dear Susan,
I want to thank you for your support and fierce advocacy on behalf of the people of Puerto Rico in 2017.
A new year begins and 100 days after Hurricane Maria made landfall, thousands of Americans in Puerto Rico — including members of my own family — are still coping with blackouts, unsafe drinking water, and homelessness.
It's painfully evident that the federal government’s response to the disaster in Puerto Rico has been unacceptably slow and inadequate, especially compared to the hurricane response in Texas and Florida.
We want to make sure that Congress makes Puerto Rico a priority in 2018. Can I count on you again this year?
Congress gets back to DC on January 8th and we must make sure they hear us loud and clear: Puerto Rico needs fair and equal treatment now.
Let’s send Congress a New Year’s Resolution: Make Puerto Rico a legislative priority!
Call the Capitol switchboard at 202-224-3121 and ask your elected Congressperson and Senators to:
Provide Puerto Rico with adequate disaster relief funding.
Increase Medicaid funding for Puerto Rico.
Since the now-passed tax reform legislation treats Puerto Rico as a foreign jurisdiction, tell Congress they must remedy that immediately as well making tax benefits and incentives like the Child Tax Credit and Earned Income Tax Credit available for Puerto Rico's working families.
We have a long road ahead, but together we can push Congress to help get Puerto Rico back on its feet in 2018!
Best,
Lin-Manuel Miranda
