planting in the new raised bed

Some pictures of planting in my new raised bed.

This is the mulch I use to deter the cats. It is the hulls of the seedpods of the large catalpa that shades my front yard. I have cleared a spot and sliced through the paper underneath.

Here's a picture of a catalpa seed pod still hanging on the bare tree.

Also a lot of dandelions!

Three New England Pie Pumpkin seedlings. I know, I should snip at least one of them.
I dumped a bucket of soil right there and mixed it in a bit; the rest of the raised bed is filled with straight compost.

Irises are blooming! The purples started opening last week. The whites smell like lemon.

I am still waiting for my irises, but I'm not sure whether that's the local climate (or this year) or just the specific plants we have here. The ones the previous inhabitant planted bloom quite late, and I'm not 100% sure the one I put in last year is going to bloom at all, despite showing new foliage in the last few days.

Your irises are gorgeous. Our neighbors have some purple ones that smell just like grape juice. New people have bought the house since last spring, so I'll probably have to explain all over again why I'm down on the sidewalk with my head in their burgeoning daylilies.

Squawsh!

That's alotta catalpa pods. I wonder if you could make a fortune marketing them as specialty mulch.

Can you move one of the pumpkin seedlings?
