As long as he's chewing the pieces and swallowing them okay -- i.e., not bolting it and choking on them -- there's no reason he can't eat the larger kibble size.

If you can swing the cost, I give highest recommendations to The Whole Dog Journal. They do a food issue every February -- which means you just missed this year's, but I think if you're a subscriber you could still get access to it -- that's the best resource available for lay folks on canine nutrition.
